Structural Engineering
Randall’s Island is home to the Parks Department’s Five Borough Administrative Building, the central hub for Citywide Services as well as the renowned Parks Fleet. In 2007, Parks began the installation of a green roof at Five Borough. Today, Parks’ roof at Five Borough is at the forefront of green roof technology. The green roof contains 25 systems covering over 29,000 square feet of roof on the west wing of the building.
In 2017, GRANT was contracted by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation to assess the load capacity of a newly installed section of green roof, and the structural member supporting it. GRANT was brought in to assess the capacity of the existing roof and suggest cost effective ways to strengthen it. In 2018, GRANT was contracted for an additional design change which would allow for additional stability with increased load.
